The whole industry is quietly retreating to the layer SHRMP.bio started on

Between late 2024 and 2025, the land-based shrimp sector saw several of the largest and best-funded companies in it fail, fold, or walk away from growing shrimp for people to eat or, at the bare minimum, their vision for it. Some of these are (or were) serious operations with real money and capable people, and most of them executed well and still could not make the business work. That was a sign for us, still at the early stages of setting out. And it was a sobering one: if the best-funded players in the field cannot make on-shore production stand up as a business on its own, then it seems that on-shore production is not, today, a feasible standalone business. It is the strongest evidence there is, paid for by other people.
But we made a second observation, and it is just as useful. Watch where the survivors went. When growing shrimp to sell stopped working, the recurring move — again and again, across different companies on different continents — was not to quit. It was to retreat up the value chain: to broodstock, to genetics, to breeding. To stop selling the animal and start selling what makes the animal.
That retreat is not a coincidence. It is the market discovering, under pressure, where the durable value is (or may be). When the box fails, the industry’s own escape route is the biology underneath it — the layer that does not depend on winning the grow-out economics - because against cheap imports it is unwinnable (for now).
Which is the layer SHRMP.bio set out to build, on purpose. We made this decision for our own reasons; for us, our environment dictated it, even before the commercial realities we observed in peers in other geographies made the near-term commercial point. So it turns out we were never what some of the “expert” feedback had called us: “yet another IoT aquarium”, “no different from the other shrimp companies”, “late to the party”. We were always proposing to build the technology layer beneath the production, around it, and ahead of it — SHRMP.OS. It turns out a good deal of the industry agrees with us about where the value is going to be. They arrived by spending money, and we arrived by thinking. And while thinking is significantly more capital-efficient, it only gets you so far without spending money. And this is the stage we are approaching.
One of a series on how SHRMP.bio reasoned its way to its strategy.
